Random thought

time

15 Mar 2021Society

I've fallen into planning my days around the hours and minutes that make up our made up concept of time. We depend so much on this system, and sometimes I wonder how much it limits our thought process. If I believe I only have an hour to work on something or meet with somewhat, will it impact the things I do? Is it a positive impact, or a negative one?

I spent two weeks in Costa Rica with no phone, no watch, no communication with anyone but the people I was with. The first few days we found ourselves asking for the time more than I realized we would, and receiving the same answer in response: "Why do you need to know?" We had nowhere to be, and so we ate when we were hungry, swam when we felt like it, and woke up with the sun. We had no schedule, and no reason to have one, and that was entirely liberating.

Though nice, it would be extremely impractical for daily living. We need some sort of common structure between us. But I wonder if there's a way to ensure that we are not limited by that structure, to maintain the freedom of spontaneity independent of time.
